Windsor's Life after the Tornado
On the morning of Thursday, May 22, 2008, no one could predict the force of God’s nature approaching Windsor, Colorado. It seemed like any other morning, a day to do business as usual.
Joanne Tofslie, the Administrative Assistant for
Windsor Community Church, was working at
the church office on that fateful morning. She
noticed that suddenly it started to rain, and then
quickly the rain turned to small hail. In Joanne’s
own words,“I looked out
the window and said out
loud, ‘God, you’ll let me
know if I’m supposed to
leave, right?’ Even as I
was sending up this
“arrow prayer” the hail
became the size of
jawbreakers! Instantly I felt
the Spirit’s presence. I said,
‘Now, God?’ Oh, ok...now!”
Joanne grabbed her car
keys and started running. She grabbed
something to protect her head, jumped into her
car and headed for home in the worst hail
imaginable. “The sound was like heavy artillery fire.
I cried out, ‘Save me Jesus!’ I wasn’t even aware that
a tornado was right behind me.” As it turned out,
only 5 to 7 minutes after Joanne left the entire
WCC building was destroyed. Praise God for his
voice in the storm!
Rather than acting devastated, the church has
come strongly together serving one another and
their community, and making the most of every
opportunity to share the hope of Christ. All that
could be salvaged from the building was stored
away, and the remaining structure was
demolished. WCC is gathering at a wonderful
interim location provided generously free by
another local church, called REZ (Resurrection
Fellowship). No one from the body was hurt, yet
several homes are in need of repair. Please pray
that WCC’s leadership would clearly sense God’s
leading for the future of the body, including their
part in rebuilding their town and new church
building.
